Eldrum: Red Tide – Text RPG Codes Review

Having just completed the text RPG game Eldrum: Red Tide, I must say, my experience was a rollercoaster of emotions, ranging from sheer joy to occasional frustration. The game's challenging nature is both a boon and a bane; there’s a sharp learning curve due to the inability to adjust the difficulty level. Battling bosses repeatedly until you discover the perfect strategy can be thrilling, as it forces you to strategize and think critically about your approach. However, this can also verge on being overly punitive, particularly when victories depend heavily on the right timing and build. The concept of choices wielding real influence on the narrative and gameplay adds an irresistible layer of excitement, making each decision feel impactful. Yet, I found myself yearning for clearer visibility on experience points and the mechanics behind leveling up, as these factors could enhance engagement.

The game's structure, divided into three acts with a modest fee for unlocks after Act 1, is intriguing but comes with caveats. While I was captivated by the storytelling and worldbuilding that spanned my initial 15-17 hours of gameplay, the abrupt transition to paid content came as a surprise. It’s a mixed bag; while I appreciated the quality of the writing and how choices affect the journey, the sudden payment requirement somewhat tarnished the experience. There were moments when I wished for the option to recruit allies or partners, which could have enriched the gameplay experience. Combat, while relatively straightforward, sometimes felt simplistic and one-dimensional, especially when facing foes that seemed programmed to evade attacks constantly. The struggle against powerful enemies, like the lonesome guard who showcased an unrealistic evasion tendency, can make or break your momentum.

Despite the issues I faced, my attachment to Eldrum was undeniable. I find myself reflecting fondly on the vibrant characters and the intricacies of the plot—a refreshing change from many RPGs that often devolve into linear narratives. The graphics and UI, albeit somewhat clunky at times, offered a unique aesthetic complementary to the storytelling. I do wish there were more opportunities for exploration and loot, as well as additional choices to make the narrative feel less constrained. As I eagerly anticipate the next chapter in the Eldrum saga, I hold onto the hope that future updates will address my concerns while preserving the essence that makes this game enjoyable. Overall, I rate it four stars, with the potential for a perfect score should my suggestions be implemented in upcoming updates.
