It is a pay to play game. While you can technically get along for free... It is super dragged out to get to a playable state. Even then you are grinding for isk to pay for Omega level clone. Without this a lot of skills and ships are locked away. The other issue is that rare nanocores are locked behind a real money paywall. As someone wise once said. "The gatcha here is real"
It's a great game with a ton of potential but the game is heavily pay to win. Some could even consider it pay to play because if you want to have even the slightest effect on a pvp battle you need to start spending. Once you have tier 7 ships and equipment, you cannot progress any further unless you either open your wallet or grind for years to unlock the further tiers. Overall, it is a terrible waste of time and money. You're better off playing Eve Online if you can.
I loved the cat and mouse game. Sneaking into nul sec, getting hunted, sneaking back out. But since the updat that added bubble camping, the game has gotten very small and frustrating. It's supposed to be a more casual mobile version of eve. I wish, since this is a mobile game, the gates were safe. Then a corp would have to patrol their area to eliminate enemies. Corps would have to fight harder to control smaller areas. I don't see myself playing this much longer.
